My Pets Can Talk

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008, 9:33 pm

Why do we feel the need to give our pets a voice? Some of you will know exactly what I'm talking about, others may think I'm nuts. Regardless... my pets can talk and HAVE their own distinct voice. Ok, granted, my husband and I make up the voices and the words - but I'm telling you if they could talk - we know exactly what they would sound like. The funny part (or sad part, depends on how you look at it) is that we both talk for them and we both give them the same voice. Let just say that my husband and I sound nothing alike (for obvious reasons) but when it comes to the dog's voice and the cat's voice - we sound identical.

And it's not just the voice per say - but the personality. We THINK we know what they would say and how they would sound. And I swear, I think we are pretty dead on.

So what do they sound like? Well, depends on the mood - of course! Our dog Junior is very happy and a little goofy. He always talks about sleeping and comfort and always wants to know what we are eatting. He always says hello but never goodbye. He tells us he loves us and that he loves his brother but would rather not deal with him... Now to the cat.

Pip hates everything. His favorite word is "No" and "shut-up" is a close second. He tells us to leave him alone and not to pick him up. How do I know this - because I just do. And what does his voice sounds like? He's high pitched and monotone.

So you might be asking... is this woman insane? If you have a pet and talk to him/her and you find that he/she is replying - guess what - you do this too. And if you stopped for 5 mins I bet you could tell me what your pet sounds like and what they're saying. Does that make us crazy? I think not.

The day in the life of my dog

Monday, January 28th, 2008, 10:55 pm

The day in the life of Junior is pretty routine. My husband wakes up first, then I will get up a little later. Junior sleeps until I either feed him or until I have to ask him to get up so I can make the bed. He raises his tired little head, gives a stretch and then stands at the edge of the bed until I walk over. Once I do, he stands on his back legs, puts his front paws on my shoulders and gives me a good morning kiss. Keep in mind Junior is a 98 lb. American Staffordshire Terrier - so he isn't the lightest dog in the world.

Once he is satisfied with his 'good morning' lick, he jumps down, goes into the kitchen and inspects his dish for his morning meal. He isn't happy if there isn't any 'treats' mixed in and walks away with his head hung low.  I try not to forget to put something special in with his food because A. he won't eat it and B. it makes him so happy.

After his meal, he goes go out for about 10 mins, comes back in and begs for yet another treat. I can't say no and hand him a little something. He races to his dog bed to enjoy it in privacy. Then comes the hard part... the 'good bye' for the day. When I leave Junior will not even look at me. I try so hard to get a kiss from him (keep in mind he was giving them out all but 30 mins ago) but this time he turns away, dodges my kisses and puts his head down. I pretend this doesn't bother me but it does. I know it is only temporary& nbsp;because when I get home he will be the complete opposite. (If you ever have a bad day, come to my house! Junior will make any of your worries melt away). But it stings a little and I leave for work.

When I get home - forget it. Junior goes crazy. He's not a barker, he's a giver. This dog HAS to have something in his mouth when you walk through the door. It's either a toy, or his brother's toy (thank goodness it's never his brother Pip - who by the way is a cat and has his own stories).

Truth be told, I'm nobody compared to my husband. Yes, Junior loves me but not like he loves his Dad. I'm very easily ignored if I walk in the door with my husband - just the after thought. (But I don't care because I'm the snuggler - I'll explain in just a few)

When we are ready for bed Junior follows us into the bedroom and waits until we are all settled before he starts to cry. Its only a short while before we say 'ok' and with that he's on the bed. I know, I know, this probably isn't the best thing to teach your dog but he's 10 and it's too late. Now, if you've been paying attention you will know how much Junior loves my husband but he LOVES to cuddle with his mom.

He lays between us but always snuggles with me. I do love it but to be honest he can be a little too snuggley and by the end of the night he is across the bed (snoring), I'm hanging off the side and my husband is sleeping like a baby.... But I'm ok with it because I know this won't last forever and I know that a little discomfort is worth the joy I get from having Junior by my side. He's our boy and I truly think I love him more than anything. I can't wait to wake up and get my morning kiss.
